While honeymooning in Australia my wife and I were
fascinated by the similarities and the differences of our two
countries. In two relatively new societies, on two pieces of
land roughly the same size, are two similar cultures caring
for the environment in two very different ways. The Aussies
impressed us in their care and genuine love for their land.
We asked ourselves, “Why aren't we more like them?”
No where were their environmental initiatives more apparent
than in the "green bag" project. Large, green polypropalene
bags are sold in almost all grocery stores for a nominal fee.
Aussies carry these bags everywhere and use them for
everything. Rarely does someone carry a disposable plastic
bag and, if they do, it probably contains doggy do.
Maybe we can be more like them. Watch how grocery store
check-out clerks double and even triple bag your items,
even if it isn’t necessary. Look how the disposable bags
you've stocked up out of guilt are spilling out everywhere
because you can't find enough uses for them.
Break the cycle. Get yourself some brightly-colored, big and
